Very Sad Miami Dolphins key player Skylar Thompson just announce that he is leaving the team to join…..

A rule that the NFL recently modified may have an impact on the number of quarterbacks teams carry on their 53-man roster during the season.

The Buffalo Bills proposed amending the normal elevation guidelines to let teams to promote a third practice squad member who qualifies as a “bona fide quarterback” to serve as a backup quarterback in case of an emergency. The proposal was approved.

After the San Francisco 49ers were unable to find a healthy quarterback in the 2022 NFC Championship Game, clubs were permitted to select a backup quarterback on game day in 2023. As one of the game-day inactives, the backup quarterback was only eligible to play in the event that one of the starting two quarterbacks had an injury.

Most clubs kept three quarterbacks on their active roster, though, because the emergency third quarterback had to be on the 53-player roster.

The majority of teams, if not all of them, would be able to carry just two quarterbacks on their active roster and designate the third to the practice squad under the Bills’ proposed bylaw amendment. Considering that third might participate in all 17 games.

DOLPHINS MAY GET ANOTHER ROSTER SPOT
That would mean that, after training camp, teams like the Miami Dolphins might only have two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, with the third quarterback—in this case, Skylar Thompson—being one of the 16 players on the practice squad.

Players on the practice squad are paid much less than those on the active roster and are seen as developing potential.

NFL practice squad players are required to make at least $12,000 per week, though this amount is flexible. A player’s minimum compensation is $16,100 per week and their maximum salary is $20,600 per week if they have played for at least two seasons.

For players with less than a year of experience, the minimum wage for the 2024 NFL season is $795,000, and for those with more than a year of experience, it is $915,000.

Thompson’s background must be evident.
The Dolphins selected Thompson, a former Kansas State star, in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft. Thompson has been developing on Miami’s 53-man roster for the previous two seasons. Due to injuries to Teddy Bridgewater, his primary backup at the time, and Tua Tagovailoa, he started two games during the regular season and one playoff game for Miami in 2022.
