Why Alejandro Garnacho Penalty Kick Against Tottenham Was Denied

Alejandro Garnacho, a forward for Manchester United, was told during the team’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur that his contact did not warrant a penalty.

Rasmus Hojlund gave United the lead three minutes into the game with a powerful goal. United, who had played with aggression from the beginning, quickly saw their lead evaporate. After fifteen minutes of play, Richarlison headed the ball past Andre Onana with skill to give Spurs an equalizer.

Before the break, Marcus Rashford gave Manchester United the lead with a deft goal past Guglielmo Vicario. But Rodrigo Bentancur’s goal just after the half had Erik ten Hag’s team settle for a draw.

When Garnacho thought defender Destiny Udogie had pulled him to the ground in the first half, he thought United should have had a chance to increase their lead. Referee John Brooks elected to play on much to the dismay of the home fans.

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League official, thought the man in the middle made the appropriate decision after reviewing the situation for Ref Watch. “I didn’t think there was enough in it for there to be a penalty,” he clarified.

“But why would you act in this way as a defender? Why would you take a chance? That is not necessary of him. It appears off, don’t you think?

Though he’s making touch and grasping him, he hasn’t pulled him down. If there had been a penalty, I would have been quite shocked.”

Speaking at full time, Ten Hag had a different take on the incident, as reported by the Evening Standard. “Yes,” he said. How are you able to help? However, I am accustomed to it at this point in the season.

“A obvious handball from [Cristian] Romero against Spurs was comparable, and I can think of several more. I believe it will turn at some point.”
