Not every offseason presents an opportunity for a candidate who has defeated a program’s fiercest foe to take over as head coach. When Sherman Moore took over as interim head coach of the Michigan football team last season, what was able to be accomplished?

Last year, when Jim Harbaugh was serving a suspension, Moore took over as head coach of Michigan for the final three regular-season games. The team defeated rival Ohio State 30–24 and then defeated Maryland and Penn State.

After Harbaugh returned to the NFL this summer to take the helm of the Los Angeles Chargers after the Wolverines won a national championship, Moore was appointed as Michigan’s next head coach. Moore recently spoke with Michigan alum Rich Eisen about his program, including his thoughts on coaching the squad to a significant victory over the Buckeyes the previous season.

“It meant everything. Whether you’re the head coach, the offensive coordinator, or the defensive coordinator, simply winning that game meant everything.” That’s what we strive for during the entire year; it means everything,” Moore clarified.

There isn’t much more significant in Ann Arbor than Michigan defeating Ohio State. Although Moore was a strong internal contender for the Wolverines, his unbeaten record against the Buckeyes as head coach undoubtedly bolstered his candidacy.

Moore joined the Michigan staff in 2018. Before the program turned things around and defeated Ohio State three times in a row in their most recent encounter, Moore helped the Buckeyes win seven and eight straight games against Michigan. Moore went on to emphasize the importance of the victory from the previous year and the competition in general.

That is the benchmark we have set for that program and ourselves, and we will keep doing so. Every day, we strive to surpass them, and we are aware of all that we do and strive for. It thus meant everything, and that is the goal for which we strive. I was ecstatic for that occasion on behalf of our players, supporters, and the institution to carry on with our current practices, and we aim to maintain that quality, Moore added.

There is little doubt that Michigan supporters can support those remarks. In his first season officially leading the Wolverines, Sherrone Moore will want to replicate the most recent high standards set by Harbaugh for the program while also trying to outwork the Buckeyes.
