The Ransom County Sheriff’s Office identified the two as Anton Schaffner, 69, of Zeeland, and Sterling Schaffner, of Bismarck. Sterling was the grandson of Anton, according to an obituary posted by Eastgate and Parkway Funeral & Cremation Services.
Their bodies were recovered from the Sheyenne River at Fort Ransom last Sunday and Monday. The two kayakers had entered the river north of Fort Ransom and were expected to join the rest of their family at a landing but never appeared, and their kayaks were found under the Fort Ransom Dam, authorities said at the
time.
