The sports world was struck with tragedy on Thursday, when Lazar Dukic drowned and died during a swimming event at the CrossFit Games. Although he was initially reported as missing, his death was confirmed shortly after.
Given the nature of the event, it’s always a risk competing. The athletes know that, but no one could ever imagine or fathom this being an outcome. Dukic was participating in the 800M swim portion.
Dukic’s untimely passing has sparked intrigue about how this could occur. There hadn’t been any previous casualties at a CrossFit Games in the competition’s history, which began in 2007.
Two cases of fatalities during Olympic Games, many more at Triathlons
The Olympic Games, which are also currently ongoing, has had some negative history associated with it. In 1912, Portugal’s Francisco Lazaro perished due to overheating after a running event. In 1960, Denmark’s Knud Enemark Jensen passed away from heat stroke after cycling. Six others died during practice or a possible aftermath of competing.
In terms of triathlons, which feature a swimming portion, there have been hundreds of fatalities. Most of them occur during the in-water section.
It’s relatively rare to see these types of tragedies happen, but they’re a very real possibility for those participating in more extreme sports that require a ton of physical exertion.
