There’s no denying that 2023 was chock-full of big tri news that kept us talking from January to December. We rounded up those top news stories of the year earlier this week (you can read that here), but when it comes to the most-read training, nutrition, gear, and culture articles on Triathlete in 2023, we find plenty more to talk about. Here’s what you and your fellow triathletes were reading and sharing most over the year.
Who knew shoes could be so contentious? Throughout the year, we heard about the benefits of running in supershoes, but those benefits seem to be a little too beneficial. After Gustav Iden won Kona in 2022 wearing a pair of On prototypes with a midsole thicker than 40mm – banned at the time by World Athletics, but not Ironman – confusion on what is (and isn’t) illegal on the footwear front reigned supreme.
Things looked to be settled when Ironman announced it would follow World Athletics rules and ban shoes thicker than 40mm, but then Iden’s shoes came under fire once again – this time, at a World Triathlon event for wearing another prototype shoe from On. Weirdly, the protest against the Norwegians was lodged by…the Norwegians. Iden’s On CloudTRI1 shoes were exonerated, but it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of the super shoe drama.
It’s a valid question, and we hear it from beginner triathletes all the time: What are you supposed to wear to your first triathlon? After all, there are three different sports, so do you wear three different outfits? In this beginner-friendly primer, we break down everything you need to know about the clothing conundrum triathletes face.
The triathlon world was rocked by professional triathlete Collin Chartier’s positive test for EPO and subsequent admission that yes, he did in fact dope. Perhaps no one was more shocked than Chartier’s own coach, Mikal Iden. In this exclusive interview with Triathlete, Iden discussed their coaching relationship, the surprisingly quiet doping investigation, Chartier’s training data, and more.
