Tottenham have been preparing for a fresh start in 2023 under new head coach Ange Postecoglou, who has been tasked with restoring the club as a top-four challenger in the Premier League following tough spells under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

However, Spurs’ preseason has now come under something of a cloud following news that owner Joe Lewis has been charged with insider trading.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have accused the billionaire of passing non-public information to friends and associates for them to trade on. He is also accused of conspiring to hide a stage in a pharmaceutical company.

According to the New York Times, a lawyer for Lewis said his client had gone to the United States to contest the charges, saying prosecutors had “made an egregious error in judgment in charging Mr. Lewis, an 86-year-old man of impeccable integrity and prodigious accomplishment”.

Who owns Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham’s majority shareholder is the English National Investment Company (ENIC) headed up by British businessman Joe Lewis.

ENIC initially acquired a majority 29 per cent stake in the club in 1991, following a purchase from former owner Sir Alan Sugar, for an estimated £22 million ($27m).

Following an assessment period by ENIC, they continued to buy up shares in the club, over the following decade, before buying Sugar’s remaining 12% in 2007 for £22m ($27m).

At the start of 2021, ENIC held around 85% of the overall share capital of the club, with the remainder held by thousands of minor investors, as part of a drive to retain fan influence within the club structure.

Who is Joe Lewis?

Joe Lewis is a British billionaire who made his initial wealth through selling his father’s old catering business in London, which Lewis had expanded after taking control.

Since the 1980s, Lewis has increased his fortune through currency trading, largely via Tavistock Group, a private investment firm he set up the decade before. Tavistock’s vast investment portfolio includes ENIC, which holds a majority stake in Tottenham.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2023, Lewis, who is now 86, has a net worth of nearly £5.1 billion ($6.6 billion), making him one of the wealthiest British nationals in the world.

Does Daniel Levy own Tottenham Hotspur?

Daniel Levy was named as Tottenham’s Executive Chairman in the early 1990s, following ENIC’s first investment, and the 61-year-old was a key player in the initial purchase as Lewis’ long-standing business partner at ENIC.

He owns a 29.4% share in ENIC, however, Lewis’ retains the remaining 70.6% as the primary club owner.

Lewis plays an active role in the club’s wider investments, but Levy is the key figure in the day-to-day running of the club.

Tottenham Hotspur cost

Spurs’ continued improvements in recent seasons, via regular Champions League qualifications and higher league placings, has created a positive financial impact on the club.

Alongside player sales and increased sponsorship revenue, Tottenham have operated on a stronger fiscal footing than some of their Premier League rivals.

That has allowed their sale valuation to rise, with financial experts Forbes initially valuing the club at £1.91 billion ($2.35b) in May 2022.

Spurs have been on a steady upward trajectory in terms of their valuation, with Sportico rating their 2023 price at £2.57b ($3.19b), as part of a 12% increase from 2021.

The data places Spurs as the sixth most valuable Premier League club in 2023, with a greater two-year increase than Manchester City and Chelsea.
