The Yale Women’s Tennis team traveled to New York last weekend to compete in the Fordham Invitational against teams from Fordham, Providence College, Army, Saint John’s, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Stonehill, and Fairleigh Dickinson.
On the opening day, the Bulldogs secured three singles victories. Julia Werdiger ’28 won her quarterfinal match 6–4, 6–3 against Mia Palladino of Stony Brook, Mirabelle Brettkelly ’25 defeated Camila Barrera Aguirre of Providence 6–2, 6–4, and Rebecca Lynn ’26 triumphed over Madison Warren of Stonehill 6–1, 6–2.
“This weekend was a great learning experience,” Lynn said in a message to the News. “I was able to put my practice into play against tough opponents. Hopefully, we can maintain this momentum as we wrap up the fall and prepare for the spring season.”
In doubles, Yale had two pairs competing. Brettkelly and Werdiger won their match 6–2 against Stony Brook, while Jamie Kim ’25 and Lynn lost 6–4 to Hofstra. Kim later withdrew from the tournament due to injury.
The second day saw more success for Yale in the singles semifinals. Werdiger defeated Fordham’s Nevena Kolarevic 6–4, 4–6, 10–5, while Brettkelly overcame Army’s Jenna Sabile 6–3, 7–6. Lynn advanced to her final by winning 6–4, 6–3 against Army’s Julia Kelly.
In doubles, Brettkelly and Werdiger reached the finals after defeating Lorraine Bergman and Catalina Padilla of Fordham 7–6 (7–4).
On the final day, Yale captured two singles titles. Lynn defeated Charlotta Buss of St. John’s 6–3, 7–5, while Brettkelly dominated Paola Ueno Dalmonico of Fairleigh Dickinson 6–3, 6–1. In doubles, Brettkelly and Werdiger narrowly lost 6–4 to Army, but it was still a strong weekend for the Bulldogs.
“This weekend was great preparation for regionals next week,” Brettkelly told the News. “It was a good mix of individual competition while staying united as a team, which sets the tone for how we plan to approach next week.”
The Bulldogs will return to action at the ITA New England Regionals in Cambridge, Mass., starting on Oct. 11.
