Sabalenka first claimed the WTA No. 1 ranking after the US Open last year, holding the position for eight weeks before Swiatek reclaimed it. Now, following a lesser-known ruling, Sabalenka has surpassed Swiatek once again in the latest rankings update.
Next week, both players will lose more points after the WTA 500 event in Tokyo concludes. Swiatek’s total will drop from 9665 to 9535 after losing an additional 130 points, either from her Australian Open or Wimbledon performance.
Sabalenka, on the other hand, will drop only 65 points for her third-round exit in Miami, leaving her with 9641 points, further widening the gap.
Both players will meet again at the WTA Finals in Riyadh in two weeks, where Swiatek has 1500 points to defend as last year’s champion, while Sabalenka stands to lose only 625 points.
