Alexander Zverev has reached an out-of-court settlement with his ex-girlfriend after being accused of strangling her in Berlin four years ago. The settlement does not include an admission of guilt from the German tennis player, who is competing in the French Open semi-finals later today (Friday).

The case returned to court last week when Zverev contested a penalty order and a £383,000 fine handed down to him last October for allegedly committing bodily harm against his ex-girlfriend and mother of his three-year-old child.

Zverev was accused of pushing the plaintiff against the wall of a Berlin apartment building and choking her following an argument in May 2020.

He has always denied the allegations and said before the French Open that he ‘believes in the German system’ and has ‘no chance’ of losing the court battle. The case has now been settled out of court between the parties.

Day one of the trial was adjourned following a request from Zverev’s lawyers to hold the plaintiff’s testimony behind closed doors. That request was granted on Monday and the tennis player’s former partner spoke without media personnel or members of the public present.

Zverev was not required to attend the Tiergarten District Court in Berlin personally unless summoned by the judge. “They made it very clear from the beginning that I don’t have to be there,” he explained after beating Alex de Minaur on Wednesday.
