Jeff Blashill’s new role as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning marks a significant moment in his coaching career, as he joins the staff led by Jon Cooper, whom he has known for over two decades. Blashill and Cooper first crossed paths around the year 2000, when Cooper was coaching at Lansing Catholic High School and Blashill was an assistant at Ferris State University in Michigan. Since then, they have coached against each other across various levels.
Blashill’s decision to join the Lightning comes after his tenure as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, where he coached from 2015-16 to 2021-22. Despite his departure from Detroit, Blashill brings a wealth of experience, including winning the Calder Cup championship with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins in 2012–13.
His recent stint as an assistant coach for the men’s USA hockey team in the World Championships further broadened his coaching experience. When he returned home, he explored different opportunities before reconnecting with Cooper, ultimately leading to his appointment with the Lightning.
Blashill emphasizes his respect for Derek Lalonde, the former Lightning assistant coach who departed for Detroit, and acknowledges the need to fill his shoes and contribute to the development of Tampa Bay’s roster. While specific coaching responsibilities are yet to be determined, Blashill is committed to helping each player reach their full potential and supporting Cooper and the coaching staff in achieving success.
His transition to Tampa, along with that of his family, is expected to be swift, particularly with the school year starting soon. Blashill’s addition to the Lightning’s coaching staff adds depth and experience to an already talented group, setting the stage for continued success on the ice.
