Following the revelation that 23 Chinese swimmers were permitted to compete in the Tokyo Games despite testing positive for a prohibited substance, two influential organizations that represent US athletes have written to the nation’s drug tsar, demanding a “truly independent investigation.”
The China Anti-Doping Agency (Chinada) claimed that they had inadvertently swallowed the heart drug trimetazidine (TMZ). The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) stated that it was “not in a position to disprove” this claim.
Following an uproar, it started an independent examination of how it handled the issue.
Within two months, the investigation’s findings—which were overseen by Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier—should be available.
Wada’s selection of Cottier was criticized by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USada), who referred to it as a “circle the wagons exercise to protect the system”.
