One of the more intriguing prospects in the transfer portal, former Alabama safety Caleb Downs, is joining the Big Ten. Multiple reports have stated that Downs has committed to Ohio State; the first one was made by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
For the Crimson Tide last season, Downs was a five-star prospect, and he lived up to expectations. He instantly took Alabama’s starting safety position and held it.
In 2023, he recorded 107 tackles, which led Alabama. The Shaun Alexander Award, which is given to the best college football rookie, was won by him.
Nick Saban, the former head coach of Alabama, gave Downs great marks.
“We’ve had some really good play from Jacob,” Saban stated in October. He is quite wise. The guy does an excellent job of planning and truly pays attention to everything. is curious as to what he is expected to perform. How it should be done by him. Why doing things that way is important. It’s also crucial, in my opinion, that he has excellent football instincts and awareness since he can somewhat read what the opposing team is attempting to accomplish. He has therefore done a fantastic job at it.
Following Saban’s retirement, a number of Alabama players, including Downs, entered the transfer portal. The Crimson Tide players had a 30-day window to enter following the coaching change.
He will be joining a team that, while still among the best in college football, has recently lost to fierce rival Michigan. Michigan went on to defeat Alabama to win the 2023 national championship. In the Cotton Bowl, where they were defeated by Missouri, the Buckeyes concluded their season.
