According to Adam Schefter, the Bears plan to interview Cliff Kingsbury, the current quarterbacks coach at USC and former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, for the position of offensive coordinator.
But one former head coach of the Bears is adamantly opposed to Kingsbury’s pass-heavy offense. He believes that the passing game should be supported by a robust run game, not the other way around.
On 670 The Score, Dave Wannstedt said to Parkins & Spiegel, “I like Kliff, he’s a good guy.” “But the worst thing Eberl Fus could do would be that. Now, if they select Caleb Williams in the draft, it could be advantageous if they appoint him to teach the quarterbacks. Everything about that makes sense.
Wannstedt Kingsbury are romantically involved. Wannstedt claims that while Kingsbury was coaching at Texas Tech, the former head coach of the Bears was a college football commentator. Though he thinks Kingsbury is a good offensive coordinator, he’s not totally sold on the idea.
“We had some excellent discussions. Kliff is likeable. He has a very strong offensive mindset. “He fulfills every requirement,” remarked Wannstedt.
Kingsbury played alongside Caleb Williams and the Trojans for one season. He spent four seasons as the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach before to that. He assisted Kyler Murray in winning three Pro Bowls and the Offensive Rookie of the Year title during that time. While serving as Texas Tech’s head coach, Kingsbury is credited with helping to develop Patrick Mahomes. As the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M, he also assisted Johnny Manziel in winning the 2012 Heisman Trophy. The Bears have mostly considered coaches from the coaching trees of Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, but Kingsbury is an exception. Mike Leach taught Kingsbury, and the two are closely related to Leach’s “air raid” strategy. This offensive is said to as a pass-first, high-tempo plan that opens up the field wide. The designs of Shanahan and McVay are more well-known for their potent run games.
