In 2020, former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson had a standout season, throwing for a career-high 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. Despite missing the 2021 season, these impressive stats led the Cleveland Browns to trade three first-round draft picks and other selections for him.
However, since joining Cleveland, Watson has struggled to replicate those numbers, with this season being one of his worst in the NFL.Analyst Charles Robinson offered insight into why Watson thrived in Houston but hasn’t performed at the same level in Cleveland. In a video shared by analyst Jackson McCurry on X, Robinson suggested that then-head coach Bill O’Brien may have been instrumental in Watson’s success, based on a conversation Robinson had with an unnamed executive.
During practice, the executive observed Watson repeatedly looking to the sideline for guidance from O’Brien, implying that the coach was making decisions for him. The executive was surprised, concluding that O’Brien may have been the one orchestrating Watson’s plays on the field.
Robinson noted that O’Brien might have been compensating for Watson’s development gaps at the time, saying, “He wasn’t a fully developed player in Houston.”
