Jeff Ulbrich was deep into preparing the New York Jets’ defensive game plan when he received shocking news that stunned him and the entire NFL.
Robert Saleh had been dismissed as head coach, and Ulbrich was stepping in for the rest of the season.
“Four hours later, I’m standing here doing a press conference as the new interim head coach of the New York Jets,” Ulbrich shared during a video call with reporters on Tuesday.
Owner Woody Johnson made the surprising decision to fire Saleh just five games into his fourth season, unhappy with the team’s 2-3 record after a 23-17 loss to Minnesota in London.
Johnson believes the Jets have “one of the most talented teams” in franchise history but doubted Saleh’s ability to take the team to the playoffs, where they haven’t been in 13 seasons, or push for a Super Bowl.
Johnson chose the 47-year-old Ulbrich, a former NFL linebacker and experienced assistant coach, whom he’s closely observed during Ulbrich’s four years with the team.
“When he speaks, players listen in a way that reflects his experience as a linebacker for 10 years, which is unique,” Johnson said. “He brings that knowledge and respect.”
Ulbrich now faces the challenge of leading a struggling franchise after running one of the NFL’s best defenses.
“It’s been a whirlwind,” Ulbrich admitted. “Four hours of pure craziness.” And things are only going to get busier.
The Jets had Super Bowl aspirations last season, but those hopes were dashed when Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles just four plays into his debut. Rodgers, motivated and healthy this season, still carries high expectations.
However, with the four-time MVP turning 41 in December, Johnson and the Jets know their window for success is shrinking.
With the team on a two-game losing streak and a critical matchup against the Buffalo Bills looming, Johnson made his first in-season coaching change since taking ownership in 2000.
“The decision I made today,” Johnson explained, “will bring fresh energy and positivity, leading to more wins starting now.”
However, Ulbrich faces a tough road ahead—only twice has an NFL interim coach led a team to the playoffs: Rich Bisaccia with the 2021 Raiders and Wally Lemm with the 1961 Oilers.
