In a statement on Saturday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed the tragic news.
“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin stated. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community.”
As per the Florida Highway Patrol in West Palm Beach, Haskins was engaged in a “fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crash” early on Saturday morning at approximately 6:30 a.m.
NBC News received an email from Lt. Indiana Miranda stating that the football player was trying to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 while on “a limited access facility for unknown reasons” due to approaching traffic. That’s when he ran into a dump truck that was approaching.
Miranda stated that Haskins was declared dead at the spot and that there is still an ongoing investigation into the traffic homicide.
“Dwayne was a fantastic friend to a great number of people, but he was also a great teammate.” I’m genuinely devastated,” Tomlin remarked. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Calabria, and his entire family during this difficult time.”
Haskins, an Ohio State University great quarterback in the past, will turn 25 next month.
Despite playing only one season as a starter, Haskins broke Big Ten records, placed third in the Heisman Trophy vote, and developed into one of the best college football players.
