Steelers HC Mike Tomlin Didn’t Tell Players About Matt Canada Firing
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t inform his players of the offensive coordinator change.
PITTSBURGH — By the time Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was taking questions from the media about his decision to fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada, his players hadn’t heard from him.
When asked when he told the Steelers players about the coaching change, Tomlin said he hadn’t yet addressed it to them directly. So how did the players learn that they would have a new offensive coordinator?
“Probably from you guys,” Tomlin said to the media assembled for his weekly press conference at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
The Steelers will transition from Canada as the lone offensive coordinator and play-caller to a two-man system that features running backs coach Eddie Faulkner as the coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan as the play-caller on gameday.
But Tomlin added that this coaching change will not affect how he evaluates starting quarterback Kenny Pickett and the goal for this week remains the same – beating the Cincinnati Bengals and staying in the thick of a crowded AFC playoff race.Stephen Thompson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications and political science from Pitt in April 2022 after spending four years as a sports writer and editor at The Pitt News, the University of Pittsburgh’s independent, student-run newspaper.
