Steelers sign a new player to 3-year contract extension.

Pittsburgh (AP) — Mike Tomlin wishes to be a part of Pittsburgh’s post-Ben Roethlisberger history.

The Steelers extended the contract of their longstanding coach for three more years on Tuesday, through the 2024 season.

In his 14 years with the Steelers, Tomlin is 145-78-1, with a Super Bowl victory and two trips to the Finals. Under Tomlin’s leadership, the team has advanced to the postseason nine times, and in 2020, it won its seventh AFC North championship.

In a statement, Tomlin said, “I am incredibly grateful for this contract extension and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 14 seasons.” “This upcoming season excites me greatly, and our goal is to win the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship.”

The Steelers finished 12-5 in 2020, having won their first 11 games before faltering in the latter part of the season, which included a crushing home loss to Cleveland in the opening round of the playoffs. The team is going through a mini overhaul, especially offensively with the retirement of tight end Vance McDonald and the dismissal of two assistants, as well as center Maurkice Pouncey.

However, in order to reduce his salary limit charge, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger reworked his contract. This helped the Steelers free up enough cash to convince wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster to return for a single season.

Given the agreement, Tomlin most likely won’t be leaving once the 39-year-old Roethlisberger retires. The future Hall of Famer has no succession plan in place, but by choosing to sign the agreement, Tomlin has indicated that he wants to be included in the process when Roethlisberger decides to hang up his helmet.

Pittsburgh’s remarkable commitment to its head coaches is strengthened by this deal. Since hiring Chuck Noll in 1969, the Steelers have only had three managers: Noll, Bill Cowher, and Tomlin. Cowher and Noll are Hall of Famers.

One of only two coaches in NFL history to start their career with 14 straight winning seasons, 49-year-old Tomlin is already ranked 21st in lifetime wins.
