The position of offensive coordinator at Ohio State has been filled by Bill O’Brien.
Three weeks after the Buckeyes hired O’Brien to be their next offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Boston College announced his hiring as their new head coach.

Eagles athletic director Blake James released a statement saying, “I am thrilled to welcome Bill O’Brien, his wife Colleen, and his sons Jack and Michael to Boston College.” Finding a coach who shares our goals and values, who has a blueprint for success both on and off the field, and who would put in endless effort to advance BC Football was our top priority when we started our search.
“Bill is an exceptional leader with a wealth of experience leading teams and coaching at the collegiate and professional levels. He is ideally suited to guide Boston College to greater heights because of his love for instructing football and shaping young men.”
After just one year as Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley left the program to take over as head coach of Boston College in 2020. O’Brien replaces Hafley. Hafley joined the Green Bay Packers as their defensive coordinator after leaving Boston College last week.
Having only been hired in January, O’Brien departs from Ohio State before even leading his first practice with the Buckeyes. Prior to the 2023 season, he served as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.
O’Brien had the chance to accept a head coaching position at Boston College and remain in Massachusetts with his family, who had not yet relocated to Columbus, thanks to the unannounced opening of the position. O’Brien was born in Boston. On Thursday at 11 a.m., he will be presented to the Boston College community and media inside the Yawkey Athletics Center’s Barber Room.
After O’Brien left, Ohio State had two openings on its coaching staff with more than a month until the end of the 2023 campaign. The position left vacant by Parker Fleming’s firing as special teams coordinator has not yet been filled by the Buckeyes.
