Former Ohio State quarterbacks coach not staying with Buckeyes after all.
Columbus, Ohio — Corey Dennis, the former head coach of the Ohio State football quarterbacks, has accepted a new coaching position in the Power 5.
Dennis has been added to coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff as an offensive analyst, according to a Utah representative. Dennis’s name appears in the Utah personnel directory as an employee.
When Ohio State hired Bill O’Brien to be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Dennis’ contract was not renewed. But OSU stated that Dennis will “transition into a still-to-be-determined role with the program” when it announced the shift. That would have been a role akin to the analyst role he is assuming at Utah, presumably.
After serving as a wide receiver and defensive back for Georgia Tech during his playing days, Dennis had spent his whole coaching career at Ohio State. Before serving as the quarterbacks coach for four years, the son-in-law of former Buckeye coach Urban Meyer advanced from intern to graduate assistant to senior quality control coach.
During Dennis’ time at OSU, C.J. Stroud finished both of his Heisman Trophy finalist seasons and Justin Fields’ 2020 campaign.
O’Brien is thought to be the front-runner for the head coaching job at Boston College, thus Ohio State might need to find a successor for him soon as well. The school reportedly started those interviews on Tuesday.
Day and Whittingham have been good friends as coaches over the last several years, partly because of OSU’s dramatic 48-45 Rose Bowl triumph in 2021. Prior to winning 8-5 last season, Utah had won at least 10 games in three consecutive seasons prior to the epidemic. In terms of yards per play, the Utes’ offense was among the top 25 in each of those 10 victory seasons.
