The Ohio State women’s basketball team defeated Belmont 84-55 on Friday to get back to winning ways.
For head coach of the Buckeyes, Kevin McGuff, it was a family affair: Kilyn, his daughter, engaged in combat with her father. Even though the younger McGuff only scored 4 points on 2-of-10 shooting, it was still important for her to get the chance to play against her father.
The father-daughter combination met in the postgame handshake line and didn’t do that in a really touching moment that followed the game. A memorable event for the Mcguff family occurred when the two of them hugged each other. View the exchange between the two below.
Ohio State entered the contest riding a 14-game winning streak that began following its season’s sole conference setback, which occurred on December 30 away from home against Michigan. With an 8-8 record, the Wolverines were attempting to stay above.500 in the Big Ten.
The opposing Buckeyes team made it difficult, despite the fact that the two teams have been on completely different paths since their prior meeting.
After a close contest in the first half, Ohio State needed to outscore Michigan by 27 points in the third quarter to win. Ten of Jacy Sheldon’s twenty-two points came in the third quarter, as she led the squad. Cotie McMahon, a sophomore teammate, scored 18 points in total that night. After being limited to 12 points combined in Ann Arbor, the two showed themselves to be difference makers.
McMahon remarked, “I just knew we were playing for something big.” “I just wanted to play a significant role in that. Looking back, I can say that the season has been wild for the squad and me in particular. I went through a brief slump before regaining my groove. I simply wanted to give this team everything I had.”
The goal was to force their fast-paced style, as the Buckeyes showed early on. Almost every time they had the ball in the first quarter, they moved it and tried to score quickly. In the opening minute of play, McMahon and Sheldon scored back-to-back baskets for Ohio State, which helped establish the pace.
