Following Florida State’s Playoff rejection, Mike Norvell made an incendiary comment that was pure fire.
Following a prosperous tenure at Memphis, Mike Norvell was appointed head coach of Florida State football. In a nutshell, Norvell’s time in Tallahassee was a slow burn: in his first season, which was abbreviated by Covid in 2020, FSU finished 3-6; in 2021, the team finished 5-7. The Seminoles under Norvell began to gain momentum gradually; last year’s 10-3 record and Cheez-It Bowl victory laid the groundwork for this year’s eagerly awaited campaign.
With an unbeaten record at the end of the year and an ACC championship, Florida State won the conference. It still won’t be able to compete for the national title. The College Football Tournament Selection Committee selected one-losing Alabama and Texas over FSU in the penultimate year of the four-team tournament. It is a “disgrace and disrespect” to the sport, as reporter JP Acosta put it, to leave FSU out.
After his Seminoles were unfairly denied a chance at collegiate football immortality, Norvell went all in with his declaration. One of the best quotes you will ever read from a head coach who has been ridiculed is this one.
The truth is that if senior quarterback Jordan Travis hadn’t had a season-ending leg injury, Florida State would have qualified for the College Football Playoffs.Following the committee’s ruling, Travis tweeted something awful. Holding an injury against a team that recently won its conference and had an unbeaten record—something Texas and Alabama couldn’t claim—is plain unfair.
In their hour of despair, Norvell batted first for his team and his supporters. FSU was so deserving of better. With Norvell, FSU knows they have a coach who will support them even if they are unable to compete for a national championship. Despite having a sluggish beginning to his tenure with the ‘Noles, Norvell has made every effort to establish his suitability for the position in Tallahassee.
