The rescheduled third-round match between Newcastle and Wimbledon will determine who hosts Chelsea in the last-16 of the competition. Wimbledon, the only League Two team left, had to postpone their clash with Newcastle due to severe pitch damage caused by flooding.
The match is now set for the week of October 28, and whichever team advances will face Chelsea in what promises to be an exciting tie. If Wimbledon manages an upset, they will face Chelsea in a London derby, with Plough Lane just five miles from Chelsea’s home. However, there are concerns about whether Wimbledon’s pitch will be ready in time.
Should Newcastle progress, they will host Chelsea in a rematch of last season’s Carabao Cup quarter-final, where Chelsea won on penalties after Mykhaylo Mudryk’s late equalizer. Despite that, Newcastle has beaten Chelsea at home twice under Eddie Howe—4-1 last season and 1-0 the year before.
In other last-16 matchups, Manchester City will visit Tottenham, defending champions Liverpool face Brighton away, and 2023 winners Manchester United will host Leicester. Arsenal will travel to Preston North End, while Aston Villa takes on Crystal Palace at home in one of several all-Premier League ties. Championship side Sheffield Wednesday will play Brentford, and Stoke City will visit Southampton.
Newcastle reached last season’s Carabao Cup quarter-final, overcoming Manchester City and Manchester United before their penalty shootout defeat to Chelsea. The previous year, they were runners-up, losing 2-0 to Manchester United in the final. Newcastle advanced to the third round this season after a penalty shootout victory against Nottingham Forest.
