In 2024, Dennis Allen will rejoin the Saints as head coach.
PORTLAND, ORLEANS In 2024, Dennis Allen will get another opportunity to serve as the Saints’ head coach.
Allen will stay with the team through at least 2023, general manager Mickey Loomis said during a news conference on Friday. He also mentioned that the team has no plans to “bottom out” and will contend next season. According to Loomis, the team will start evaluating its players and personnel the next week, and no decisions about the staff will be made until then.
Inquiries about Sean Payton’s future as head coach were also directed at Loomis. According to Loomis, the Saints have allowed the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans to interview Payton for the head coaching positions they are now holding.
Despite his retirement last year, Payton is still bound to the Saints under contract, so if he were to sign with another team this summer, they would have to give the Saints draft selections in exchange. According to Loomis, the team has not yet decided on the exact amount of money they would be seeking.
“I wish Sean Payton all the best. He gave the New Orleans Saints everything he had,” Loomis remarked on Friday. “But we also understand that his contract is an important resource for our team, and we have an obligation to make the most of it.”
Loomis further stated that, in the event of a lateral move, the organization probably would not permit any present Saints employees to work with Payton in any potential new position. (For example, a quarterback coach going from the Saints to Payton’s new team to instruct quarterbacks.).
