LOS ANGELES Sean Payton’s contract extension for another five years with the New Orleans Saints has been agreed upon, sources told the Times Picayune | Advocate.
The news was first reported by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.
Payton’s contract with New Orleans will run through the 2026 campaign.
Following Sunday’s 27-9 loss to the Rams, Payton talked about his deal and said he wished the subject had been asked in a different situation.
Payton remarked, “That’s a side note; it’s part of our business.” “I would say I’d much rather answer that question under a better set of circumstances, but I enjoy coaching this team.”
Although the 55-year-old Payton and quarterback Drew Brees will always be connected, having Payton in place offers stability in the event that Brees decides to retire.
After taking over a squad that finished 3-13 in 2005, Payton joined the Saints in 2006. Payton led the squad to a divisional championship with a 10-6 record in his debut season. Payton also played a significant role in New Orleans’ recovery after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which completely destroyed the city.
Payton is 8-6 in the playoffs, with a 119-74 record, and a.616 winning % since coming to New Orleans. His greatest accomplishment was coaching the Saints to a league title in Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts.
Known for his prowess on offense, Payton’s teams won the league championship in net yards per game in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2016. In addition, the Saints led the NFC South in 2017 and 2018 and finished first in scoring in 2008 and 2009.
In 2008, Payton, who is also well-known in New Orleans, established the Play its Forward Foundation with the goal of raising money and awareness for families in need of social assistance, health care, and education.
Payton is on the league’s competition committee, so his impact extends beyond New Orleans. Payton had a key role in the 2019 offseason modifications to the pass interference rule, which are currently subject to review.
As an offensive assistant at San Diego State, the Saints coach began his coaching career. In 1997, Payton joined the NFL as a quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. After that, he worked as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the New York Giants for four seasons (1999–2002) before joining the Dallas Cowboys in 2003–05.
