Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is being assessed following his announcement of retirement.
After “tweaking his foot,” Jameis Winston left New Orleans Saints practice early on Monday, coach Dennis Allen informed reporters.
The starting quarterback was still being assessed, Allen continued.
“He sort of twisted his ankle a little bit when rolling out during a 7-on-7 time,” Allen said to NFL Network’s Jane Slater during an interview with Inside Training Camp Live. “There isn’t really any update other than that; we brought him in for some examination, and we’ll see where he’s at.”
Winston hurt his foot, not his ankle, as the Saints later explained to Slater.
Since returning to Saints practice following his season-ending ACL injury last season, Winston has appeared unhindered thus far. Though the veteran quarterback acknowledged that his rehabilitation is still “a journey,” he noted two weeks ago that he felt “more explosive” in training camp than he had earlier in the spring.
For Winston and the Saints, hopefully, Monday’s adjustment is all that it is and not a sign of something more significant. In the event that Winston is forced to miss time during training camp or the regular season, Andy Dalton is one of the Saints’ more dependable backups.
Saturday, August 13, is New Orleans’ preseason game against the Houston Texans.
