NEW ORLEANS — Now that the regular season is over, former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will probably be among the most sought-after names available.

In an interview on Fox before Sunday’s games, Payton stated that the Denver Broncos were among the first teams to seek him. Despite having previously spoken with Denver’s ownership, Payton, who finished with a 152-89 record over 15 seasons in New Orleans, stated he could not officially interview anyplace until January 17.
“Any team that would want to inquire or speak with me can do so, they just need permission from the Saints,” Payton stated. “And if that turns into something more later on, compensation would be needed, just like in a player deal.
“That’s type of protocol, Denver’s the first team, and I was able to speak with their owner. Thus, it would go to the group and subsequently to the Saints.”
Russell Wilson, quarterback for the Broncos, recently talked about how he would deal with and resolve some of Wilson’s issues in an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”
“It’s really about the triangular relationship — ownership, front office, head coach,” Payton stated. “The quarterback was uneasy when we traveled to New Orleans at that time. Therefore, I believe that the most crucial factors are ownership and front office functionality.”
Two coaches have been fired by the Broncos in the last 12 months. Vic Fangio was sacked on January 9, 2022, following a 7-10 result, while Nathaniel Hackett was fired on December 26 after this season’s 4-11 start.
Payton, who joined the Saints as head coach for the first time in 2006, stated early on that he doubted his retirement would last indefinitely. He informed Cowherd that he had texted Mickey Loomis, the general manager of the Saints, proposing a trade for tight end and quarterback Tysom Hill within a “year or two.”
