On Sunday, September 26, 2021, in Santa Clara, California, before a game, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, left, speaks with Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
McDaniel worked as an offensive coach with the Atlanta Falcons for two seasons before joining the 49ers in 2017 as a run game specialist. In 2013, he was the Washington Redskins’ receivers coach; in 2014, he was with the Cleveland Browns.
When Mike Shanahan, the head coach of the Denver Broncos at the time, hired McDaniel as an intern in 2005, he started his NFL career. A year later, he was hired as an offensive assistant by the Houston Texans, where he got his first coaching position in the NFL.
2011 saw McDaniel return to the NFL, this time working under Shanahan in Washington as an offensive assistant after two years in the now-defunct United Football League. In 2013, he received a promotion to receivers coach.
Given that McDaniel’s predecessor was accused of using discriminatory hiring methods in the NFL, the Dolphins’ decision to appoint him is all the more significant.

Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL and three teams, the Dolphins, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos, only last week. She claimed that the organization is still “rife with racism” despite its outward condemnation. Her case focused on racial hiring practices for coaches and general managers.
