Ten Hag described Lisandro Martinez’s latest injury—sustained just a month after returning from a long-term foot issue—as a “personal disaster” for the defender. Martinez picked up the injury during a clash with Vladimir Coufal while shielding the ball for a goal-kick in the second half at Old Trafford, leading to his substitution shortly after.
Asked about the severity of the injury, Ten Hag said, *”I can’t say for sure, but it doesn’t look good. There’s serious concern. We need a few days to get an accurate diagnosis and assess the damage.”* He added, *”Martinez is very upset and disappointed. It’s a personal tragedy if the injury turns out to be serious, and it’s also a huge blow for the team because he brings so much to us.”*
Speaking to Sky Sports, Ten Hag emphasized Martinez’s importance, saying, *”This is very bad—for him and for the team. He’s a crucial player who not only adds footballing quality but also brings spirit to the squad. While we have other center-backs who can step in, Martinez’s presence makes a significant difference.”*
Martinez, who had spent nearly three months recovering before returning in United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham on January 14, has been instrumental in the team’s recent unbeaten run, contributing to three wins and a draw. However, statistics reveal United have conceded fewer goals and collected more points per match in the Premier League this season when Martinez was unavailable.
Despite this, Ten Hag has solid defensive options in Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindel of, who returned from injury on Sunday. West Ham manager David Moyes also praised Martinez’s impact on United, highlighting his composure in build-up play. Moyes even pointed out a moment in the match where Martinez forced Emerson wide after Harry Maguire lost possession, noting, *”I think Emerson was unsettled by Martinez.”*
