Following tragic shouts directed ats during last week’s 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road, Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has issued an apology.
After hearing shouts that alluded to the Hillsborough tragedy in an indirect manner, Luton initiated an internal investigation and threatened to expel any supporters found to have participated.
“A statement has gone out from the football club and I want to apologise as well,” Edwards stated. “We don’t condone that, of course, and there’s an investigation going on at the moment.”
A club statement said that Luton is “extremely disappointed” and that they “wholeheartedly apologised to anyone offended by the chants”.
Luton is “seeking observations” from the FA, and Bedfordshire Police is “further detail”.
Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters lost their lives in an April 1989 crush at Sheffield’s Hillsborough Stadium.
Before his team’s Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on Saturday against Manchester United, Edwards made a request to the Luton faithful to “bring the noise but do it with respect” in his speech on Friday.
“We want our supporters to bring the noise, so we encourage them to go out tomorrow, but let’s also be good and respectful.
“Sunday is Remembrance Sunday and Sir Bobby Charlton’s funeral is on Monday as well, so we go to Old Trafford at an important time.”
The Premier League has introduced an educational program for classroom use with the goal of eradicating bad habits like frequent changing in stadiums.
Liverpool, who are thought to have previously worked with Leeds United, Manchester City, and Manchester United, also offered to collaborate on education with Luton.
