Exclusive to Sky Sports: Luton Town’s captain, Tom Lockyer, confirms he’s received medical clearance following his collapse during the Championship play-off final. The 28-year-old midfielder suffered from an atrial flutter and has undergone a corrective procedure since then.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Lockyer shared that he’s been given the green light after his ordeal in the Championship play-off final. He recounted the incident where he collapsed during the game against Coventry at Wembley, which Luton ultimately won 6-5 on penalties. Lockyer received prompt medical attention after falling to the ground without being touched. He explained the circumstances leading to his collapse and the immediate aftermath in his first interview since the final.

Lockyer expressed his relief, stating, “I’m doing well. It’s been a whirlwind week or so. I received medical clearance yesterday [Monday], and I’m in good health moving forward.”

Reflecting on his condition, Lockyer acknowledged his luck in the situation, as the medical team quickly diagnosed it as an atrial flutter, an irregular heartbeat condition that, while serious, was not life-threatening. He underwent a minor corrective procedure on May 31, ensuring the likelihood of such an incident recurring is minimal.

The 29-year-old Welshman, speaking at length for the first time since he collapsed in the 59th minute of the abandoned Premier League game against Bournemouth in December, admitted it is “out of his hands” if he will ever play again.

Lockyer was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator after he was hospitalised for five days.

Reliving the incident, Lockyer, who also suffered a collapse during May’s Championship play-off victory against Coventry, told Sky Sports: “I literally died but I have been numb to the whole thing since.

“It was just a normal day, and that was the most worrying thing because I felt completely fine.
