A 3-1 defeat to West Ham United pretty much sealed Luton’s fate. They now need a 12-goal swing in their Favour on the final day of the season to swap places with Nottingham Forest and stay in the division. Barring a mathematical miracle, it is Luton who will return to the Championship after a year in the topflight.
A year ago, Luton defied all odds to win the play-off final against Coventry City on penalties at Wembley and earn their return to the big time. The last time they had played in the topflight was in 1992, departing just before England’s topflight was reconstituted as the FA Premier League, something Luton voted for but never took part in.
