With a little over 24 hours to go until the January transfer window slams shut, clubs up and down the country are acting frantically in their hopes of getting last-minute deals over the line.
That, however, will not ease the pressure on striker Rasmus Hojlund, who is United’s only available senior striker. Anthony Martial faces an extended spell on the sidelines through injury, meaning the prospect of losing Hojlund does not bear thinking about.
Hojlund – signed from Atalanta last August – has scored eight goals in United colours so far. Though it is not an earth-shattering return, it is reasonably respectable when you take into account the low standard of service he has had to feed off, particularly from out wide.
Scoring goals has been a problem for United as a collective so far this season, highlighted by their tally of just 24 Premier League goals in 21 matches. Following Luton Town’s impressive 4-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday night, United are now the lowest scorers in the Premier League above the relegation zone.
Though you may wish to launch to United’s defence, perhaps referencing their injury crisis as a contributor, it is simply not good enough. For all the talent United have within their ranks, both in attack and in midfield, scoring goals should not be too problematic.
