Prior to the team’s Week 18 regular-season finale, Payton had a preliminary discussion with a member of Denver’s ownership group. On January 17, he attended a formal in-person meeting with the team’s search committee in Los Angeles. After a 4-11 start in his first season as Denver’s coach, Nathaniel Hackett was sacked. Payton, who has been the Broncos’ assistant since 2016, takes over as head coach.
