Sean McVay, Coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Responds to ‘Friend’ Brandon Staley’s Fire

 

 

 

 

 

Their housemates at SoFi Stadium are going through a lot as the Los Angeles Rams get ready to play the Washington Commanders and stay ahead in the postseason race.

Following a humiliating 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers declared on Friday that general manager Tom Telesco and coach Brandon Staley had been fired. Before joining the Chargers, Staley was the defensive coordinator for the Rams. His team’s poor play was especially criticised, with a 27-0 deficit against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs being a particular low point.

Despite Staley’s less-than-ideal tenure with the Chargers, Rams head coach Sean McVay still considers him a good buddy and mentor.In an interview with reporters on Friday, McVay discussed his feelings over the firing of his former defensive coordinator.

“No, other than you just want to be there for your friend, and I also know what a great coach he is, what he has meant to me, and what I’ve learned from him,” said McVay. “These are incredibly difficult tasks. I grew up in this industry, so I am aware of how difficult it can be at times, but I also know what a fantastic coach he is. I am certain of what I have personally witnessed; I know he will react, and I believe he has a very promising future.

Matt LaFleur, Zac Taylor, and Kevin O’Connell are just a few of the excellent coaches McVay has created. They have all successfully guided their new teams. Staley, though, never quite saw the same level of success; he ended his time with the Chargers at just 24-24, with a 5-9 record this season.

Staley and McVay have a close relationship, so it wouldn’t be shocking if the latter ends up back with the Rams. After all, in his one and only season as head coach, the Rams had the best total and scoring defense in the league.
