McVay claimed that after speaking with the running back this morning, he was told of his choice.

After being selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the University of Georgia, Michel went on to win several Super Bowls during his career. With the New England Patriots, he won Super Bowl LIII, the last one that Tom Brady won with them.

In Super Bowl LIII, a low-scoring defensive game that saw the running back defeat the Rams—his future employer—Michel scored the game’s lone touchdown.

After Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson in Los Angeles, Michel was reduced to a bit of a backup position; nonetheless, he participated in Super Bowl LVI, which the Rams won.

Sony Michel, a running back for the Los Angeles Rams, has declared his NFL retirement.

Michel (1) was a standout player at Georgia who used this touchdown run to win the Rose Bowl. New England selected Michel 31st overall after Alabama defeated the Bulldogs to win the national championship.

In Super Bowl LIII, the final Super Bowl championship won by the Patriots and the final one Tom Brady (behind) won in New England, Michel (26) scored the lone touchdown.

In double overtime of the 2018 Rose Bowl, he ran for three touchdowns and 181 yards to help Georgia defeat Oklahoma and go to the CFP National Championship in Atlanta. There, Alabama defeated the Bulldogs in overtime.

After selecting Michel with the 31st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Patriots used him as a rotating running back in addition to James White and Rex Burkhead.

Michel participated in 13 games during his rookie campaign, rushing for a career-high 931 yards. In 2019, he totaled six touchdowns through the air while running.

Michel participated in three games throughout the offseason, gaining 336 yards and six touchdowns through the air.

That includes his totals from Super Bowl LIII, where he scored the game’s lone touchdown (94 yards) and led all rushers in the Patriots’ 13-3 triumph that set a new record for the team’s sixth Super Bowl crown.

After spending two more seasons in New England, Michel amassed 2,292 running yards and 14 touchdowns via the air.

Michel (20) was released midseason last year after signing a contract with the Chargers in the 2022 offseason.

Before the 2021 NFL season began, Michel was traded to the Rams for a fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft (which was used to draft Jake Andrews) and a sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft (which was used to draft Chasen Hines).

Despite playing with fewer yards, he finished first among the Rams with 845 running yards.

The Rams went on to defeat the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, 23-20. In the game, Michel only gained two yards overall.

As Austin Ekeler’s backup, Michel signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022. He appeared in 10 games and gained 106 yards. On New Year’s Eve 2022, Michel was cut and signed a practice squad contract with the Dolphins.

Michel re-signed with the Rams in June 2023, and then on Saturday, he announced his retirement. In 65 games, he amassed 3,243 total yards on 779 runs and 18 running touchdowns before ending his career.
