Daniel Farke has every right to be unhappy with Crisencio Summerville after Leeds United incident.
On Saturday, February 10, the 22-year-old Dutchman scored two more goals against Rotherham United to bring his season total to 15 goals across all competitions.
After Georginio Rutter’s through pass, Summerville sprinted home to double the Whites’ lead after 52 minutes. Eight minutes later, he converted a penalty kick.
With Rotherham failing to muster any kind of rally, and Leeds comfortably leading the game, the standout winger elevated his penalty kick with a clever Panenka that tricked goalie Viktor Johansson.
Daniel Farek, who acknowledged that he was not a “big fan” of Summerville’s decision, was unimpressed with the penalty kick even though the goalkeeper was nowhere near the lovely chip.
“I would prefer to have the ball into the corner, similar to Joel Piroe’s goal from our most recent home game (which included a penalty). This does not sit well with me.
Farke is quite justified in doubting Summerville’s panenka penalty. The winger has contributed 23 goals in 30 games across all competitions, and he is now in some of his best form.
But there’s a thin line separating confidence from conceit. A missed panenka penalty would elicit a totally different response from Leeds supporters than it would if they were in a position of extreme importance, such as trailing a promotion opponent 1-0 or drawing 1-1 with seconds remaining.
