In-depth analysis of Leeds United’s dismal 2022–2023 season, which resulted in their Premier League relegation, is provided by Sports Mole.

Lightning failed to strike twice for Leeds United as their three-year Premier League tenure came to an end, twelve months after they almost avoided relegation on the last day of the previous season.

Despite a lavish summer spending binge, Jesse Marsch was unable to turn his young team into one that could pull itself out of danger, and in their brief stints in the Elland Road dugout, both Sam Allardyce and Avi Gracia failed to keep the Whites out of the relegation picture.

Leeds finished the Premier League season in 19th place, five points outside of safety. As the team gets ready to return to the Championship, its supporters will be eager to put their sadness behind them as soon as possible.

This is Sports Mole’s in-depth retrospective of Leeds United’s dismal 2022–2023 season.

Leeds lost out on two key players last summer when midfield talisman Kalvin Phillips signed with Manchester City and Brazilian winger Raphinha joined Barcelona. Both players went on to win La Liga and the Premier League this season with their new teams. Leeds had secured their top flight status on the last day of the previous season.

The West Yorkshire team made nearly £100 million from the sale of both players, so they decided to spend that money and a little more on nine new players. Brendan Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen joined from Red Bull Salzburg, Marsch’s previous team, while Tyler Adams, Marc Roca, Wilfried Gnonto, and Luis Sinisterra—who signed for a then-club-record £25.5 million—were among the other notable first-team additions.

Leeds kicked off the new season with a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road. They next drew 2-2 with Southampton before winning 3-0 at home against Chelsea. The Whites defeated Barnsley, a rival team from Yorkshire, 3-1 to advance from the EFL Cup’s second round.
