Even though they immediately returned to become resounding champions under Vincent Kompany, it’s estimated that they would have still incurred financial losses of over £50 million. Leicester, who also lost about £50 million during their relegation, had a similar experience; they finished in 18th place, just two points behind Everton.
If Everton’s point deduction had been applied to the previous season, Leeds would have ended one spot higher in the table and would have still not been able to avoid relegation, but it might have brought in an additional £2.2 million. Claims from Southampton and Nottingham Forest don’t seem to have much support because if the penalty was given to Everton in that year, neither club’s league standings would change from the previous season.
The Premier League’s decision, which is the biggest point-related penalty in the history of English football’s top division, will be appealed by the Toffees.
After a rather encouraging start to the season for Dyche’s team, Everton’s ten-point deduction drops the Merseyside club into the bottom three, where they are now tied for fourth place with Burnley, the basement team.
The ruling is similar to Leeds United’s ten-point deduction from the Football League in 2005–06 for the club going into receivership. Months later, when the squad was already in League One, they received a second 15-point deduction for improperly leaving administration.
The 30-point deduction given to Luton Town in 2008–09, which resulted in the Hatters’ expulsion from the Football League, and the 21 points Derby County received in 2021/22 due to financial troubles are not quite as harsh as Everton’s punishment. The ten-point ruling, though, is the biggest deduction ever given to a Premier League team. Only two other teams in England’s top division have received point deductions: Portsmouth (9 points) for going into administration in 2009–10, and Middlesbrough (3 points) in 1996–1997 for missing a match.
This chart shows every point that Everton has lost from the start of the 2013–14 English league season in comparison to the new penalty.
