Williams police have identified 58-year-old Anthony Villarreal from Corvallis, Montana, as the kayaker who died after his kayak overturned on Dogtown Lake. Authorities recovered his body on Saturday morning, following his disappearance after the kayak capsized early Friday, according to a statement from the Williams Police Department.
The Maricopa County Search and Rescue Dive Team, along with underwater robotics, were deployed due to the complexity of the search. Williams police responded to a distress call around 11 a.m. on Friday, reporting the incident. Eyewitnesses indicated that a sudden gust of wind may have caused Villarreal’s kayak to flip, and despite their “heroic efforts” to assist him, he disappeared underwater. His body was found the next morning.
The Williams Police Department reminded boaters and kayakers to always wear life preservers, as they significantly improve the chances of survival in such accidents.
