Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirms he will be returning in 2024.
In an effort to help Kansas City become the first club in NFL history to win three consecutive Lombardi Trophies, the head coach of the Chiefs announced on Monday that he will be back for the 2020–21 season.
One day after his Chiefs upset the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, Reid was asked about the idea of retiring on top. “Honestly, I haven’t even thought about it, but I get asked,” he replied. “I haven’t really given it much thought—I’m still kind of in shock over the game and what happened there. Nevertheless, I’m frequently asked, and my response is always, ‘Why didn’t Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick retire?’ Pose those queries to those elderly men.
“But because I’m getting older, I suppose people will ask me that. I haven’t really been there, either. I haven’t given it much thought.”
In the lead-up to Super Bowl LVIII, there was a lot of talk about the 65-year-old coach’s potential retirement. Reid fueled those rumors by declaring after the Chiefs’ overtime victory against the 49ers, “I haven’t had time to think about it.”But Chiefs owner and CEO Clark Hunt stated on Sunday night that Reid’s comeback was always expected.
With Sunday’s win, Reid joined Bill Belichick, Chuck Noll, Joe Gibbs, and Bill Walsh as coaches with three or more Super Bowl rings, marking a unique achievement. Although winning three straight would be an incredible accomplishment on his Hall of Fame resume, Reid hasn’t given this possibility any thought.
Though I don’t think about it much, I believe that would be really cool. A nice gesture,” Reid remarked. “When you’re in this thing, you don’t truly go there. You return to your dimly lit room with the film, the draft that is about to appear, and the combine. That’s sort of where you go with all those things. No three-peat is being discussed. Well, some men do. Yes, that would be fantastic.
