Paul Mariner, 68, a former football player for Ipswich Town and England, passed away.

The renowned athlete, who played for the country from 1977 to 1985, had brain surgery last year to treat a tumor.

Paul’s death was verified by his family via a tweet.

After a brief fight with brain cancer, they stated he passed away on July 9 in the company of his family.

“We would like to thank all of the people who came to see him through his illness for their support and for the messages that were sent to him, they meant a great deal to him and us.”

On Saturday morning, representatives of the Ipswich Town Football Club and England expressed their sorrow at the news.

“An unbelievable footballer” was praised by former teammates.

“We’re sad to have learned that Paul Mariner, who made 35 appearances for the #ThreeLions, has passed away at the age of 68,” the official England Twitter account stated.

Between 1977 and 1985, Mariner played for England, tallying 13 goals.

We are sending our condolences to his friends, family, and former clubs.

“We are devastated to hear the news of Town legend Paul Mariner’s passing at the age of 68,” Ipswich Town FC wrote in a statement at the time.

“During this difficult time, Paul’s family and friends are in everyone at #itfc’s thoughts.

“I’m grateful, Paul.”

Paul started his career at Plymouth Argyle before moving to Ipswich Town in 1976. There, he became an important member of one of the team’s most successful teams in club history.

He won the 1978 FA Cup with Sir Bobby Robson’s team and then won the 1981 UEFA Cup.
