Ipswich Town captain sends blunt promotion warning to Leeds United amid £70m claim.
Despite the huge disparity in squad valuation, Ipswich Town skipper Sam Morsy is adamant that his team can compete with Leeds United and Southampton in the Championship promotion fight.
After losing to Middlesbrough over the weekend, Leicester City is the clear favorite to win the one automatic promotion spot among the three teams. In what is expected to be one of the most exciting promotion battles in memory, Leeds, who presently hold the second slot, are under pressure from Southampton and Ipswich. Given that both Leeds and Southampton had recently been demoted from the Premier League and had managed to hang onto a number of elite players, expectations were always very high for both teams. Ipswich are clearly the underdogs because they are only promoted from League One this season, but Morsy believes his team can compete with the wealthiest teams in the league. Without a doubt, they are tough teams, but so are we, Morsy said to TWTD. We all have unique abilities. Some talk about Southampton’s Premier League attackers and Leads’ £70 million front line, but we know what we have: terrific players, a great management, and a great sense of teamwork.
“We’ve been a team for a few years, and we know what it takes to go on a lengthy winning streak and keep together, having done so last season. While everyone has positive memories that they will cling to, I like where we are right now. We are very powerful and aware that we must persevere and perform many tasks correctly. We only need to keep our attention on ourselves while trying to appreciate every moment. Why would Southampton’s form be our main concern? Every week, we would simply be depressed! It was their longest winning streak ever. Of course, we are aware of the outcomes for the other teams, but we don’t focus on them. We need all of our energy for our own games, so it would just be a waste. We have been winning the previous two because of what we have been doing.”
