Towards the business end of the season, Ipswich Town is still dominating the Championship.
Eventually overcoming a difficult stretch of only one victory in nine games from mid-December to mid-February, Kielan McKenna’s team has reclaimed their early-season momentum at this crucial juncture in the season.
With their 2-0 win against Plymouth on Saturday, the Tractor Boys not only secured their first five-game winning streak in the second division in twenty-one years, but they also took second place with three points following Leeds United’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.
With 11 games left in the regular season, Ipswich has also narrowed the deficit to Leicester City to only three points, suggesting that winning the championship may be their next goal.
Having said that, the Suffolk team may be able to add one of these five free agents on a summer free transfer, or they may choose to add them to the roster for the final stretch.
O’Hare, the poster boy for Coventry City, is first on this list. He and the CBS Arena are still in negotiations for a contract.
O’Hare, a 25-year-old who has nine goals and nine assists in 21 games—his first coming in late October—has been a major factor in the Sky Blues’ mid-season comeback from 20th place to having their sights set on a play-off finish.
Naturally, Doug King and Mark Robins are exerting every effort to lock down the playmaker in a new contract, but the former has also acknowledged that O’Hare is considering his alternatives because his current contract has three months left on it.
Similar to Coventry’s situation, it appears that Ipswich’s best chance of signing O’Hare would come from promotion, as three teams currently playing in La Liga and Scottish Premiership giants Celtic and Rangers have been mentioned in recent reports as potential destinations.
