Kieran McKenna, the coach of Manchester United, will take over as manager at Portman Road, ending Ipswich Town’s search for a new leader.
The 35-year-old has been strongly linked to the position and is anticipated to officially start on Friday. On Saturday, he will watch Ipswich play Sunderland from the stands.
Since Paul Cook was fired on December 4, the League One team has been looking for a replacement. In the interim, John McGreal has been managing the team.
After Town and Barrow drew 0-0 in the FA Cup, Cook was fired. Town then lost the replay 2-0 on Wednesday, further depressing many supporters.
McKenna was an under-18 coach at Tottenham Hotspur before joining the coaching staff of Manchester United under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Although an injury ended his playing career, he started his coaching career at the Spurs academy and worked his way up to the youth teams. His first managerial position will be at Ipswich Town, where he will try to turn things around for a team that was predicted to contend for promotion back to the Championship but is now nine points off of the play-off spots in League One, ranked 12th.
McKenna will be the first manager hired by Gamechanger 20 Ltd, the team’s new owners, who acquired the team in April.
According to the consortium’s CEO Brett Johnson, it was “committed to restoring ITFC to its former glory” at the time.
“To this end, the first priority is promotion to the Championship and the management team will be given additional funds to strengthen the playing squad,” he stated.
