2 transfers Ipswich Town simply must prioritise between now and the end of the January window.
The Tractor Boys are aiming for consecutive promotions from League One to the Premier League in their first season back in the Championship following a four-year hiatus.
With a current ranking of second, Kieran McKenna’s team is in the automatic promotion spots. They lead Leeds United in fourth place by two points and Southampton in third place by just one point.
In an attempt to increase their chances of promotion, Town has already added three players this window: Lewis Travis, Jeremy Sarmiento, and Ali Al-Hamadi.
Freddie Ladapo, who has joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the remainder of the season, is the only significant departure to date.
This article examines two transfers that Ipswich needs to get priority for before the January transfer window ends.
Sam Gallagher.
Alan Nixon reports that Ipswich has made an offer for Sam Gallagher, the striker for Blackburn Rovers.
Ipswich reportedly made a three-year offer, but their two offers of £1 million and £1.5 million for Gallagher were turned down.
Although Gallagher’s contract is scheduled to expire at the end of the current campaign, the club may choose to extend it for an additional year.
After George Hirst suffered a season-ending injury and Ladapo left, Ipswich began a well-documented search for a striker this transfer window.
Al-Hamadi was brought in from AFC Wimbledon, but as he is moving up two divisions from League Two, it is not realistic to expect him to start playing right away.
Gallagher, who is 28 years old, is a skilled striker in the Championship.
The former England U19 international is very strong in the air, eager to press, and willing to rush in behind, which are traits shared by George Hirst.
Therefore, he would be a suitable stand-in for Hirst, and Al-Hamadi would be relieved of some of the burden upon his possible arrival.
Marvin Johnson.
Alex Crook reports that Ipswich’s £1 million bid for Marvin Johnson, the left-back for Sheffield Wednesday, was turned down.
Johnson was kept out of Wednesday’s starting lineup at the beginning of the season by former manager Xisco Munoz, but he has since been re-added by head coach Danny Rohl.
Johnson has been a crucial member of the Owls club ever since he returned to the fold. In 14 championship games this season, he has three goals and two assists.
Johnson, who can play all over the left side, would be a good backup for Leif Davis.
With 10 assists in 25 league games this season, Davis is maybe the greatest player for Ipswich; only Southampton’s Adam Armstrong has more.
If the 24-year-old were to suffer an injury, it would have a significant effect on Ipswich; thus, it could be important to bring in backup on the left side to rotate Davis sometimes and maintain his fitness.
Similar to Davis, Johnson is a terrific ball carrier and a fantastic option if you want someone to create opportunities from the left side. He would probably only be a short-term possibility at 33, but Ipswich could really benefit from his expertise.
