Luongo, following a half-cleared Ipswich corner, heads the ball high, back into the packed penalty area. Hirst does a good job of delaying his marker and nodding the ball over the six-yard line with his physical presence. After missing two excellent opportunities in the first half, Broadhead smashes the ball into the net from close range past an impotent Gunn and celebrates joyfully. And that is precisely 1-0.32 minutes: Barnes and Sainz connect for Norwich and almost create another opportunity for a shot. Given the strain they’ve been under, it would be very amazing if Norwich were ahead at halftime. Nevertheless, Hirst tries to get a hold of a ball in behind as Ipswich break rapidly, but the ball is ushered out for a corner.
Thirty minutes in: There’s a glimmer of hope for Norwich, but Sainz lobs a shot over the crossbar, earning thunderous applause from the home crowd.
27 minutes in: Rowe gives up on the right, and Ipswich suddenly finds themselves pressing goal once more as Norwich tries to play it out from the back. Burns has plenty of time to choose his shooting position and is set up to attempt a shot from the center, but he smashes the shot high and wide. Norwich must feel like they are playing against twenty men after yet another escape. That is evidence of Ipswich’s excellent ball use and pressure, but they could already be up 3-0 if they had improved their finishing.
