Lee Evans, a former Blues midfielder, claims he was playing at his best level for Town last season and is eager to play again for his new team, Portsmouth, whom he signed a contract with until the summer last week after leaving Portman Road by mutual consent near the conclusion of the transfer window.

The 29-year-old Evans had knee surgery in October after the 1-1 draw at Huddersfield the previous month took a toll on an already-existing issue.

The Welshman helped the Blues win promotion in 2022–2023 with 21 League One starts and two substitute appearances; however, he was sidelined again in February because of a knee injury.

“I want to get back to that form of my life, which was probably me when I was playing at Ipswich last season,” Evans stated to The News.

“In October, I underwent a major operation called medial ligament reconstruction, which I was eager to have done. Injections are a treatment option, but the moment had come.

“In September, I was hurt during a tackle at Huddersfield.” The surgeon and I had previously decided that, in order to save my career, I should definitely get it done if it happened again.

“Even though I was handling it well, it was harming me because it was keeping me out for up to 12 weeks at a period.

“My major concern was getting it mended correctly because I was spending too much time in the treatment area. I’ve been bothered by this issue for the past few of seasons.

“The knee should be like it was when I was eighteen, smashing balls all over the place and flying into tackles,” the surgeon stated. “Happy days, that sounds good to me,” I exclaimed.

“At 29 years old, I’m in a critical phase of my career and should be reaching my peak as a central midfield player. I’m happy that I’ve resolved this issue because I think I have the best years ahead of me.

“It’s been a long five months after a major surgery, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I’m happy to be playing outside without any pain.”

After leaving Wigan in the summer of 2021, Evans signed with the Blues. He played in 55 starts and six substitute appearances, scoring six goals—three of which came in the team’s opening 6-0 thumping of Doncaster Rovers.

Thinking back to January, when Town had already filled every position in the 25-man senior EFL roster as he continued his recuperation from the operation, he continued, saying, “I could have sat there at Ipswich and just picked up my money, but that’s not the character I am, I wanted to play football.”
