On his first snap, Jordan Love dropped back and took advantage of what the Green Bay Packers believed the Detroit Lions defense would provide them.
They were accurate.
Green Bay defeated the NFC North-leading Lions 29–22 on Thursday thanks to a career-high three touchdowns from Love, who set the tone with a 53-yard connection to Christian Watson on the opening play of the game.
Love stated, “It was something we put in this week that we thought was going to work.” On the morning of the game, Love had to convince coach Matt LaFleur to go with the first call after having second thoughts. “We had faith in it.”
With Dan Campbell’s boldness on fourth down and Jared Goff’s career-high three fumbles, including one that he recovered for a touchdown in the first quarter, the Packers (5-6) were in charge of a game they never trailed.
On their final touchdown drive, the Lions (8-3) converted just once on five fourth down attempts. Faking a punt from their 23 after behind by nine points in the third quarter was one of the misguided attempts.
